As always Jo, spot on. The article could be rewritten for homeowners with a mortgage and have similar results.

One has to be careful with those statistics. I used to own a holiday park with 23 bungalows available for rent 52 weeks of the year, BUT for holidays only. they could not be your permanent or main residence. Hell, yes. Mega greedy landlords. Lets break out, they can all stay in our houses for free. Hell no, we could pay them to stay and look after the property. What an equal society that would produce. All that HB saved for the Government could be paid to destitute Landlords. Oh, hang on, back to original position!

If signing a tenancy agreement in September 2019 one would have been unaware of the problems Covid was going to bring. BUT, as a student signing a tenancy agreement in September 2020 one would or should have been aware of the threat of Covid and what might happen. So if you signed a tenancy agreement knowing all the potential risks why should you now walk away from that agreement without penalty. You are grown ups in a grown up World. Face up to it before you graduate and join the real World permanently, as I did. I do have student accommodation paid for by hard earned cash, it is now MY income that puts food on My table

I totally agree with Robert Brown. If housing charities really want to help how about paying the rent for all those deserving cases who cannot or elect not to pay their rent. Without the rent I too will become a problem case as I will have no income, who will then help me. It is simple, tenants sign an agreement to pay rent and live in my property. If they stop paying they should leave. If I leave a shop without paying for a Mars Bar I can be prosecuted, and rightly so, not protected because of Covid-19.
