MP wanting ‘pets in lets’ in hot water over benefits

The MP who is the architect of a Private Members Bill to allow pets in privately rented property is facing a backlash over controversial remarks about benefit claimants.

Andrew Rosindell, Conservative MP for Romford, introduced the Dogs and Domestic Animals Accommodation and Protection Bill, urging dogs and other animals to be allowed in rented accommodation so long as owners demonstrate their care for them.

The proposal has cross-party support and has been backed by animal welfare charities including the RSPCA, Battersea, Dogs Trust, Cats Protection and Dogs on the Streets. However, no time has been found for the Bill to make progress because Coronavirus restrictions have cut debating time in the House of Commons.

But now Rosindell is facing strong criticism after telling viewers of the BBC’s Politics Live programme that some recipients of the £20 Universal Credit uplift introduced during the pandemic “quite like getting the extra £20 but maybe they don’t need it."

Chancellor Rishi Sunak wants to withdraw the uplift, saying it was intended only to be temporary, and it is understood that dozens of Conservative MPs have voiced concern within the party about the effect of a withdrawal.

Rosindell - who according to the Mirror newspaper bought a £289 TV for his constituency office on expenses last year - told BBC viewers: "The harsh reality is that this country is much poorer than it was before this pandemic, yet the number of people on Universal Credit has doubled.”
