DWP to slash repayment of arrears timescale - report

The Department of Work and Pensions is to slash the timescale for repayment of arrears for tenants on Universal Credit.

It has told property accreditation service safeagent, along with other industry organisations, that in February it will announce details of the new shortened timescale.

It is thought the current delays - under which landlords can wait up to nine weeks after notification for arrears to even begin being paid - may be cut to just seven days.

Isobel Thomson, safeagent’s chief executive says: “We are delighted with this change and it will make a big difference to landlords to know that in the event a tenant on Universal Credit falls into arrears that these will be paid quicker.

“We look forward to the detail of the change when it is launched and well done to DWP for their work on this for the benefit or tenants, landlords and agents.”

 

 

Under DWP rules if a tenant on Universal Credit has over two months’ rental arrears the landlord can apply for the housing costs element to be paid directly to them via the Alternative Payment Arrangement scheme; but it’s been reported that some DWP staff decline to do this if the tenant objects, even though tenant consent is not mandatory.

    Won't affect me. No arrears but then no DSS or UC claimants either.

    Wonder if anyone can guess the connection between these two?

    Come to think about it, my only eviction from about 300 tenants was someone claiming housing benefit but not paying rent. It's also the worst condition in which I have ever had a property returned.

    We are not allowed to say ''NO DSS'' so they can waste their time viewing as we are under no obligation to give a reason when rejecting an application to rent.

    No worries. Soon the government will pass legislations that the Landlord should satisfy the proposed DSS tenant, beyond reasonable doubt of course, that the adverse decision is not because of their employment status. We are already acting as immigration and border control offices after all. So one more legislation to protect the "tenants", should buy some votes.

    Just say "DSS & HB welcome" as long as they can prove they have three dogs and two cats, a reptile & a hamster all with vets certificates. (We don't want to be discriminatory now) Probably still get a few calls though.
    Getting a lot of applicants calling with (lockdown) dogs. They get very emotional on the call
