What’s your view on short-lets? Mayor Khan wants to know…

London’s Labour Mayor Sadiq Khan wants to know the views of individuals on letting out homes in the capital via short let platforms such as Airbnb.

The explosion of short letting platforms, and the tens of thousands of London properties listed on them, have been highly controversial amongst the general public and those in the lettings industry.

Now the Mayor of London wants residents in the capital to take a short survey to inform his response to the government’s consultation on the regulation of short-term lettings. This is due to launch later this year.

The consultation closes on July 4 and you can find it here.

If Mr Khan wants to provide social or council housing, he should get on with that and perhaps learn the concept of 'Private' Rented Sector.

Drive out long-term landlords and this is what happens. Drive out Airbnb etc and they'll sell up but it won't solve the housing shortage and it won't decrease prices, it'll just carry on but with even less rental accommodation available, decreasing the supply of workers in the services sectors and forcing tourists to go elsewhere to stay. The solution is to convert more of those old office blocks into social housing as opposed to "affordable".

Mr Sadiq Khan wants to know our views on the explosion of tens of thousands of Short Term Let’s in London. The answer is staring him in the face it’s the Interference with Assured Shorthold Tenancies / the Removal Section 21, meaning the end of AST. Will the brain has the capacity to take that on board or is it too much to take in.

Its very simple. Lack of supply (due to legislation changes, air bnb plus other reasons) leads to a heavily competitive market , tenant desperation and then rising rents.
