From January through to the spring is traditionally the busiest time of the year for people moving home and the next few months look set to be no different.

This month’s stamp duty reforms, announced by George Osborne in the Autumn Statement, will save 98% of home movers money, which may prove to be the nudge many people need to move up the property ladder.

What’s more, with interest rate rises predicted during the second half of 2015 and May’s general election causing uncertainty in some quarters of the housing market, the next few months look set to be particularly active with a high proportion of the UK’s residents looking to buy and sell property once 2015 kicks in.

If you are thinking of moving to a new home in the New Year there is a considerable list of things to evaluate and there will be a considerable number of costs incurred: from packing and removals to utility bills and conveyancing.

One thing that is becoming increasingly important when moving is the provision of telephone and broadband. People have become so reliant – especially on the internet – that there is no time to hang around for a connection. Likewise, the quality and price of these services is now equally important in an ultra competitive market.

Moving home can present the perfect opportunity to change providers if you are looking for the best broadband deal, a more expansive package or would just like to partner with a different telecoms provider.

The first question you need to ask yourself is: Am I still within my minimum contract term? Ending a contract will more often than not incur a cost which will be dependent on how long is left to run. Therefore, it is best to know where you stand in this regard. You will need to speak with your current provider to notify them whether you will be retaining their services at your new address or indeed changing allegiance to another firm.

The next thing you need to consider is what type of broadband will be available at your new home. It’s best to find out the situation beforehand so you don’t uncover any nasty surprises. As a rule of thumb, if you are moving to an urban area, city or large town, most broadband and wireless options will be available to you. On the other hand, if you’re moving to a remote or rural area, your options are likely to be more limited.

To find out what broadband is available in your area, this broadband checker will give you a good idea. Also, we have previously blogged on the different types of wireless broadband which you can read about here.

Once you have considered all of the above there are a few other aspects to think about. It is good to know how soon you will be up and running in your new property and whether it costs for installation.

Moving home has become increasingly expensive and we could all do without the extra costs, not to mention the fact that we couldn’t bear to be offline for longer than ten minutes! If your provider says it won’t be an instant fitting, it could be wise to see if the provider can get in to the property to install before you move in.

At TenTel we offer a price guarantee to beat the big four (SKY, Virgin , BT and Talk Talk) over a six month period as well as offering our customers free installation phone and wireless broadband with no contract and just 30 days’ notice.
