Charge! Landlords eligible for home charging point grants

One in five properties in the UK could benefit from new government grants to help fund electric vehicle home charging points for rented properties. 

Following the discontinuation of the former EVHS funding in March 2022, the EV Chargepoint Grant for Landlords and the EV Chargepoint Grant for Tenants and Flat Owner-Occupiers offer up to £350 for the installation of a home charging point to make EV ownership easier for those living in rental accommodation or flats. 

The new grants will allow landlords, and subsequently tenants who own an EV – or plan to switch to one – to have access to a charging point to recharge their electric vehicles at home. This will, effectively, offer future-proofing to properties amidst an ever-increasing amount of EV sales and widespread ‘net-zero’ efforts.

The UK sees approximately 460,000 electric vehicles on its roads in 2022, with 64,000 EV registrations just this year alone. The combination of this data, and reports that over half of motorists aged 16-49 are expected to switch to electric vehicles in the next decade, shows this move by OZEV is well-timed. 

To show exactly how landlords and tenants can benefit from the new EV Chargepoint Grants, Smart Home Charge - a retailer, installer and authority on home charging points - is working with rental property provider Annington. 

Smart Home Charge will be installing EV charge points for Annington tenants, allowing them access to efficient electric vehicle charging whilst also allowing them to save money on the actual charge point.

Danny Morgan, editor and marketing manager at Smart Home Charge, says: “The new EV Chargepoint Grants for landlords, tenants and flat owners are exciting, as they help open up the UK rental market to affordable home electric car charging. It’s also very well-timed too, as there are more and more EVs on UK roads and many people, particularly younger individuals who rent homes, want to make the switch from petrol and diesel-powered vehicles.”

 

 

And Gary Smith, property manager at Annington, adds: “We’ve seen a huge increase in interest in EVs from our tenants, who are now actively looking for properties that have chargers in place, so their homes are ‘EV ready’. That’s why Annington is working with Smart Home Charge to install charge points at a number of its properties, so they can be used by existing tenants but also future-proofed for those who are yet to make the shift to an electric vehicle.”

The Office for Zero-Emission Vehicles is offering this grant to landlords and tenants through authorised home charging point installers, of which Smart Home Charge is certified.

    If any of my tenants want a charging point I will be happy to give my permission, but I won't be paying for any of it.
    The Electrician I use is now qualified to fit these charging points , he says the cost should be around £500, I wounder how much some of these scam artists are charging ?

    Why should the taxpayer subsidise any electric car buyer?
    If they're as cost effective as claimed then the investment should be quickly recouped.

    Andrew I am already hearing about problems. Single phase electric even electric Boiler 14kw is all you can put on it, what about everything else.
    I also know someone will Solar Panel doesn’t give very much then the neighbours put a similar system in. It’s complicated enough with inverters, large storage batteries and a loan of electronics. Then they over loaded the system and blew the electric Boards transformer. We probably need 3 phase for quicker charge. I understand using public charge points is expensive not all are free and won’t be for very long.

    I am engineer and it's all a scam. No such thing as green or renewable energy. The electricity grid couldn't possibly cope with the load. Prince Charles is championing this and it's obviously don't do as l do it's do as l say. In essence it's all about impoverishing us all. That's what kings do !

    I've got an EV and solar panels. It's early days so I'm still assessing the realities of it. The charger we bought cost nearly £1000 even after the £350 discount but it does allow us to choose whether to just use surplus solar electric for the car or import from the grid.

    My concern with having car chargers in rental properties is that most tenants don't understand electric bills. How many would say the property is really expensive to run because they've forgotten to take out the cost of the electric the car is using?
    I don't know how much information the cheapest chargers give. Mine tells me how much electric the car has used, how much solar the hot water has used, how much the house has used, how much imported and how much exported.

    If a tenant who paid their own electric bill wanted to pay to have one installed by a professional installer I would be happy to let them do so. I don't have any concerns about the electrical supplies to any of my properties. Right now none of my tenants have EVs so it's not something I've encountered yet.

    I agree more with both comments above Regarding impoverishment and diesel cars it’s all to damage us.
    I now have to agree with the people who say it’s not a business because it’s a farce not a business. So if I have an unruly Tenant or becomes so as a result of removal of Section 21. It seems the only way to get rid of the Tenant that I can’t tolerate is if I want to sell.
    Therefore I will have to sell in order to get rid of the Tenant how ridiculous.
