A studio flat in near King’s Cross, London, hit the headlines this week after users of networking sites were outraged at its tiny size.

The Guardian told the story of how the flat, basically a bed in a kitchen, was snapped up by renters within 16 hours of first being advertised on Right Move in the early hours of Tuesday.

The flat was rented for £170 a week or £737 a month.

The story was picked up by other media and was described as a symbol of London’s soaring property prices. Landlord Andrew Panayi insisted that the property had planning permission.

But council inspectors were called in and imposed an order on Thursday preventing it from being rented out.

Islington Borough council's housing chief councillor James Murray said. "The problem is that people are getting squeezed by high private rent prices and the lack of affordable housing, so you get landlords who are in a position to exploit people."
