A landlord has been prosecuted for failure to make improvements to his tenanted property, including failing to install a fire detection and alarm system.
Following an investigation by Cambridge council it was determined that landlord Paul Sanderson had failed to comply with an Improvement Notice served on him in December 2016.
Sanderson has bow pleaded guilty to four offences contained within the Improvement Notice which required him to install a fire detection and alarm system, to provide and install an adequate heating system, to repair broken glazing and to remedy the penetrating damp that was affecting the property.
He failed to comply with numerous requests by the council to carry out the works putting the health and safety of his tenants at risk due to the inadequate fire precautions and from excessive cold, damp and mould at the property.
Sanderson has been fined £4,000 with costs of £5,000 and a victim surcharge of £190.
A council spokesperson says: “The majority of landlords in Cambridge offer good quality accommodation and comply with the law. This successful prosecution will set an example to the small minority of landlords and property agents who break the law, put their tenants at risk and who take advantage of vulnerable people for financial gain.
“Adequate housing conditions are important to protect the health and safety of occupiers of rented accommodation. There is no room in Cambridge for ‘slum landlords’ and we will continue our work and take necessary enforcement action where landlords or property managers operate in this manner and fail to comply with the law.”
