An interesting analysis of the current rental stock shortage has been undertaken by Sky News.
Using data from property consultancy TwentyCi, Sky says that n September 2019 there were 120,610 new rental listings at an average price of £1,290. But last month - September 2022 - rental listings in the UK were almost a third lower, while prices were over a fifth higher.
In some places the drop in listings has been even greater.
In Bradford there were 688 new listings at an average price of £557 in September 2019 but by last month there were half as many new listings as there were three years ago, while rents were 26 per cent higher.
Sky News analysis of data from flat-sharing service SpareRoom shows that the average number of inquiries per rental ad in the UK is almost four times what it was in September 2019, rising from 3.2 to 11.9.
And looking at the fundamental cause of the problem - an overall shortage of housing - Sky says that successive governments have failed to delivery on house building pledges.
Specifically it says in their 2019 manifesto the Conservatives pledged to "continue to increase the number of homes being built" with an emphasis on rebalancing the market towards more homeownership.
However, Sky found that there is still a long way to go when it comes to house building. In the decade to 2021, the population grew faster or at the same pace as the number of homes in 150 out of 309 local authorities.

No mention of landlords piling out because it is no longer worth all the headaches and regulations etc.
No surprise of course, who would want to rent today 🤔🤔, the government are of zero use, get them out…. Even as a Conservative voter all my life, this nonsense has to end.
Agree on one hand. However not sure Labour are better. Of the few sentences I have ever heard her say; I've heard the shadow chancellor say "make landlords pay" about half a dozen times!
No mention of the elephant in the room. Visas given out by Boris to India. Encouraging HK to come to the UK. Cmon on down to Ukrainians. Inordinate amount of Africans. Eastern Europeans ALL wanting to be housed. Millions of houses will need to be built just to accommodate what has happened. Uncomfortable truths I’m afraid
A wise man…. But the government and the lefties will NEVER acknowledge it, we are over populated but seem incapable of even talking about it, let alone dealing with it.
None of the woke dummies have the guts to talk about immigration for fear of being un-PC, unwoke, labelled out of touch, a racist or be 'cancelled'. They have to say there is room for everyone and we embrace an 'inclusive' and 'multicultural' environment that provides us with 'diversity'.
To all the people who want open borders and let anyone in. The council tax should go up £1.00 for every 1,000 immigrants to help pay for all the services, schools, NHS etc. Then reduce £1.00 for every 1,000 that are deported. It's easy to say 'lets help them', not so easy to pay for them.
Wonder what the regs are for tents in fields. Might be the way to go😜
We already have tents under the flyover in Norwich, supplied free of charge
Nice one 😂 watched a program on Las Vegas about this…. Wow, it looked like a scene out of Mad Max 💀💀
So sky have analysed the data and concluded there’s not enough houses. Well I’m absolutely blown away. Thanks Sky - your insights and depth of knowledge in this area are second to none, what would we do without your journalistic rigour?
Thank god it's for free and we don't need to pay for their news through the licence fee.
Another idea is landlords should be made to pay for the licence fee for all UK residents throughout the cost of living crisis.
Apply for charity status Nick
This is a very good idea. Polly, Alica and Wilson Craw have all done it and they are raking it in making more people homeless.
Had to larf at the telly this morning when they were incredulous that there was a lack of stock and rents were at a premium - now wonder why that is ?
Was also pointed out that the worst rental accommodation is mostly "council" - who dont play by their own rules
Worse to come
