Activists turn on “derisory” Shelter management

Tenant activists have turned on the bosses of Shelter - just as the charity wants to maximise income from its annual Christmas appeal.

A stridently worded tweet from the Greater Manchester Tenants Union - which has previously backed rent controls and other policies beloved of Shelter - does not hold back with its view of the charity.

It says: “Greater Manchester Tenants Union recognises the excellent work that charity workers at Shelter provide to tenants  and those at risk of eviction in the face of a brutal housing crisis created by government policy and inaction.

“We note the [trade union] Unite members at Shelter have overwhelmingly voted in favour of strike action following a derisory pay offer from senior management.

“We acknowledge these workers’ commitment to social justice and appreciate  how difficult the decision to strike must have been for them given their commitment to defending against evictions, preventing homelessness, campaigning for policy change and helping tenants understand their legal rights.

“We believe that both tenants and workers must demand change using any level of power they have available to them. As one worker at Shelter said: ‘At the very base level, absolute bare minimum, those working for a housing charity shouldn’t be experiencing housing insecurity as a result of being unable to pay rent.’”

Over 600 workers at the charity have staged a fortnight of strike action in what the trades union Unite calls “a bitter dispute over pay.”

Shelter’s management has imposed a three per cent pay increase in 2022 which Unite claims has left many of its own staff being unable to pay their rent leaving them haunted by the threat of being made homeless.

Don’t these people really do good work and deserve a pay rise? Making people homeless. Is that a job that should be rewarded? I think a pay cut is more appropriate.

The whole outfit needs an overhaul and a change of approach. Getting rid of current "leadership" would normally be the first step.
