A recycling company says landlords should do more to encouraging HMO tenants to boost recycling.
The firm - First Mile - suggests landlords insist individuals in multi-tenanted properties use QR-coded recycling sacks which are personalised to each user and can then be traced back in the event of problems.
The company claims this technology has revolutionised recycling “enabling landlords and other business owners to access real-time data about the recycling’s end location, ensuring complete transparency and accountability.”
As each code is specific to a business or tenant, the technology also means that any contamination issues - such as food waste being put in a dry mixed recycling sack - can be identified.
The company claims its own QR code system has already been used on 40m recycling sacks across the UK.

Tell you what. How about First Mile supply these special QR coded sacks to each and every house (as all people produce waste not just tenants) Any violations should then be taken up by them leaving us out of the equation. We can’t even get tenants to open a window to air in let alone enforce recycling refuse correctly
Exactly, every monkey is getting on the back of Landlords for absolutely no reason.
Next landlords will be requested to flush the tenant's toilet.

U can take a horse to water - or a tenant but u can’t make them drink. The L Lord will get it in the end. And Jahsn u got it spot on!
There are more problems with rubbish separation due to lack of collections than anything else.
A 5 person HMO is provided with 5 tiny little recycling buckets to last a fortnight. It's about enough capacity for 3 or 4 days. They haven't got space for any more buckets. They do however have a big grey wheelie bin.
A student house has 2 recycling wheelie bins which should be ample, except the bin collection team seem to forget to empty them every other fortnight.
I have a house in France which has a far better system. Weekly collections for a start. They give out rolls of yellow bags for recycling so there are no storage issues or bins cluttering the pavements.
I live in Borough of Hillingdon where we still have the old system or actually the council collects the rubbish. We have tough nylon bags supplied by the council at no cost to resident to collect green waste, black bags for general rubbish, clear bags supplied by council for recycling, food waste bins and biodegradable bags supplied by the council.
All the rubbish collected weekly. What a pleasure.
I rent properties in Croydon, Merton, Brent and Harrow - where collection fortnightly and they won't take if the lid is open or some contamination etc. Common denominator is contract with Viola - Nightmare.
One of the reasons I got rid of my HMO's. Had to manage them myself as local agents were not interested and ended up round there all the time sorting out breakages, cleaning, recycling, squabbles between tenants etc etc. Regularly took their bottles to the bottle bank. No thanks.
