New Generation Rent boss to be chosen this month

Interviews for the post of director of Generation Rent are scheduled to be held this month.

The most recent holder of the post was Baroness Alicia Kennedy, formally known as Baroness Kennedy of Cradley.

Closing date for applications is this coming Monday and advertisements in a number of publications say that interviews will be held later this month.

The job has an advertised salary of £57,000 but the organisations says another figure could be offered “dependent upon experience”, along with the employer pension contribution of seven per cent.

The advertisements claims that Generation Rent - which was founded nine years ago - “represents the UK’s 13 million private renters” and “campaigns for a safe, secure and fair rental market.”

It also claims that it has made “a substantial impact on the national debate and scored significant legislative wins for tenants, consistently punching above its weight.”

The successful candidate is expected to lead the organisation, and strengthen its position as “a leading participant in the housing debate.”

In addition to running the activist group, the director will be involved in the management of the Renters’ Reform Coalition, a coalition of 20 organisations which lobbies government for pro-tenant reforms.

Alicia Kennedy was appointed a Labour member of the House of Lords by former party leader Ed Miliband, and was at one time a London Labour councillor as well.

She joined Generation Rent as director in the summer of 2020: upon taking the role she resigned the Labour whip in the House of Lords and became, officially, a cross bencher. At the time of her appointment the group said Baroness Kennedy’s focus would be to secure improvements to the lives of renters including the abolition of Section 21 eviction powers.
