Shock alliance blocks council call for rent control powers

An unexpected and unlikely political alliance has prevented another city council demanding powers to freeze private rents.

London, Bristol, Liverpool and Manchester are amongst the various local authorities wanting the UK government to delegate powers to control private rents.

Now there’s been a move to add Belfast to the list - but traditional foes in the Sinn Fein and the Democratic Unionist Party have joined forces to frustrate the cut council from making the gesture.

In Belfast’s case the council would have to seek powers from the Northern Irish devolved government at Stormont  - but Sinn Fein has already dismissed the idea of rent controls led by councils as “hot air.”

However, Sinn Féin’s opposition is not to rent controls but to councils having such powers.

Indeed Sinn Fein backs controls on private sector rents, but wants them implemented across Northern Ireland and simply operated at local level.

Some independent councillors on Belfast Council cited Bristol as an example of a city which is lobbying the UK government to secure more powers.

Either way the combined forces of the DUP and Sinn Fein defeated a motion calling for the enhanced local council powers to be given to Belfast.

90% of people lived in rented property before the war. The labour government introduced rent controls after the war, and by 1980, only 8% of the population lived in private rented property. History repeats itself will they never learn!

Most working people either lived in tied houses, owned by their employers or in newly built council housing up until the sixties when the strivers were able to move into their owner occupied homes.

The exodus of the strivers from Council housing, coupled by those buying at big discounts under the right to buy debacle then selling at huge profits has led to the better council estates being gentrified and the others becoming sink estates.

Most of those who still need to rent don't want to live in sink estates and would prefer to pay proper market rents than see the private rental sector decline due to any ill advised rent controls.

Isn't that precisely what the government wants to happen?

Shin fein is gaelic for we ourselves. I suppose no hope of the young generation today doing anything for themselves,
Now changing the law for children to get married who will they be capable of supporting.
I seen a young chap had 2 kids with one girl, then had 2 more with another girl he’s only 20 yet, now gone missing no one knows where he is, he uses drugs that’s fine the system will keep & house them
all, did someone say there’s a shortage of housing, this is no isolated case.
