Left wing MP says government helps landlords over renters

Veteran Labour left winger Dianne Abbott has accused the government of helping private landlords over tenants.

In an article in the Left Foot Forward online campaigning publication, Abbott chronicles the recent economic issues of rising interest rates and supply shortages of both private rental properties and general affordable housing.

Then she makes a series of claims including, firstly, that “widespread anecdotal evidence of potential renters being charged hundreds of pounds for viewings, even online ones” - although no examples of this are cited by Abbott, who is MP for Hackney North and Stoke Newington.

Secondly, she says landlords are “increasing rents at every renewal” and she speaks of “reports of an entire Welsh village being bought up by property developers, with residents facing an immediate sharp rise in rents.”

Abbott then says the government has “taken a series of steps to support landlords and disadvantage tenants” including stopping mortgage interest relief “which drove out large numbers of individual landlords in favour of large property firms” and using the anti social behaviour policies announced this week of “moving the goalposts in favour of unscrupulous landlords” while “delaying the implementation of new energy efficiency rules” for landlords.

She concludes her article by saying: ”This shift in favour of landlords in the middle of a housing crisis is hardly a surprise. A quarter of Tory MPs are landlords and a fifth of all Tory Party donations are made by property companies.”

This woman doesn’t understand a lot about anything.

Supply is reducing for all manner of reasons. Perhaps somebody could volunteer to sit down with her and run through the numbers on her calculator? I would love to her try and get her head around Osbourne’s 2015 interest tax changes.

    icon

She's never shown any aptitude for sums.

    icon

She has a degree from Cambridge University. You don't. Time to shut up.

    icon

    Or anything else Robert.

    icon

Simon, I'm not sure she got to Cambridge on merit. Time for you to get back down the job centre.

    icon

Come off it Simon in this day and age a degree meant nothing they are handed out to any old T, D, or H

    icon

Simon - She only got a lower second-class degree (2:2).

Hope whomever volunteers to sit down and explain it to her isn’t afraid of heights, as it’s one heck of a drop to dumb it down to her level of understanding.

My academic qualifications outrank hers and my real life experience as an employee of companies large and small, as a manager, business owner and Landlord is significantly greater than any real life experience of the "learned honourable member for the leisured classes".

İf that is really Nick, I remember we chatted to your guys about us buying one of your clubs. I was working with a London organisation. I really loved that club (up by Churchill Square), but we couldn't sort the deal. If you're just using his name, that's rather foolish of you.

Typical Abbott. No idea on anything. When Labour get in next time- but hope not- then LLords will get stoned from everywhere. Abbott needs to and buzz off into the long grass.

Diane Abbott , the mathematician genius who claimed police officers would be paid 500 a year , makes David lammy look like Einstein

God help us all if Labour get in …

    icon

Using mathematical genius and Dianne Abbott in the same sentence is akin to using surgical prowess and Jack the Ripper in the same sentence.

    Not that Idiot women again.
I thought that the amount of embarrassment she caused Labour in the past would see the end of her.
Knitting Fog would be easier than comprehending any of her rubbish.

    icon

She and Corbyn were lovers in the 70s. That are 2 bad smells that just won’t go away.

Charge £100s to view properties ?? is this woman for real ?

  • icon

I love her idea of Government supporting Landlords.
Would it be the extra 3% stamp duty they charge us, the Removal of Section 21, the introduction of Section 24, the Deposit debacle, the removal of our 10 wear & tear, Tenants fee ban, the 2015 De-Regulation Act, not classing us as a Business for taxation purposes,
How 2 Rent guide by Shelter and changed a dozen times, Right 2 Rent & share codes, Register for holding Information Commissioner's Office, Certification of all equipment & appliances, join an Accreditation to learn how to do what you were doing for decades, now let’s have a Redress Scheme to turn the knife in landlords back, an Ombudsman to screw you over,
Oh! how could I forget a Repeating Licensing Scheme or should I say 3 allegedly supposed to be non profit making but don’t tell that to a donkey he might kick you.
I have to thank anti-Private landlord Government for wanting us out for the big boys their friends and big Developers & Institutions to take over but must drive up Rents first to make it viable for them, getting rid of the competition in one stroke they need out Tenants. Sorry Dianne not forgetting your contribution and thank you for being so helpful.

Is this the same hard left lady who sent her son to a private school?

  • icon

I don't understand how she has remained in Parliament for so long! She is so wrong about so many things why do voters keep voting for her!

What is funny though is how LLs think the Govt favours tenants & tenants think Govt favours LLs! IT appears no-one is happy with the Govt!

  • icon

Wait… the govt have supported landlords by removing interest relief?! Wow, that’s some support!!! And what are the chances that back in 2015 she was one of the (all of them) MPs who was loudly cheering when Osbo announced it?!

  • icon

So many comments from the ignorant masses about a woman who has a degree from Cambridge. No wonder people hate landlords and can't wait for them to die off. 😂

    icon

She doesn't act like she has a degree. Where would you live once the landlords have all gone?. Have the Council house you? On the street.

    icon

    Chip on shoulder Simon ??

    icon

Simon - She only got a lower second-class degree (2:2).

    icon

I wonder if she lived in rented accommodation whilst reading for her history degree?

    icon

Maluka, Perhaps she was staying in the Chancellor of the University's accommodation.....

    icon

Maluka I expect she is one of the lefties that don't believe in property ownership, likely lives in a council house enjoying the subsidised rent while blocking that home from a deserving family, there's a lot like her when you look around

    icon

Like the RMT's Bob Crow. On £100k a year and insists on staying in his cheap council house denying it to someone else who needed it more. He left the house in the end....

    icon

Simon - where do you live? In rented accommodation or your own castle?

    George Dawes

    Lammy is supposedly a barrister

Probably more of a barista , have you seen his pathetically embarrassing answers on celebrity mastermind ?

And he’s on their front bench !

    🤦‍♀️

    FedUp Landlordy

Oh dear, Mr Sapon, this, just one of MANY Abbout gaffs she's prone to do:

    Radio interview Quote
'Well... if we recruit the 10,000 policemen and women over a 4 year period, we believe it will be about £300,000.' LOL, & you try defend her...

Math is definitely her strong point!! Lol.

To reiterate, 1 of MANY incompetent inaccuracies she often warbles out!!

How the h€ll she's remained is proof how flawed the system is,

She wouldn't last a minute in a private job.

  • icon

She's the ultimate "Dime Bar" no brains, just a big mouth.

  • icon

YOU CLEARLY HAVE NOT READ THE SMALL PRINT FOLKS any degree gives you the automatic right to commit hate crime and tell lies
regarding mssss abbbotttt isn't this same abbott who at every opportunity claims discrimination because of gender and colour but refuses to even acknowledge the violent anti semitism of her party

    icon

I have three degrees, does this give me the right to interrogate tenants (give them the third degree)?

    icon

If you have three it sounds like you are another greedy landlord. Why do you have three? I think you should give them the third degree. Give it to them hard.

  • icon

Andrew, they could have worked, saved, supported themselves and bought a property for the years they spend at University or probably bought one outright for the fees at Harvard.
They might have a better grasp of the real World instead of having degrees making nonsense rules for us and live off others which is what they are all about, is this fools day or are we landlords everyone’s fool.

  • jeremy clarke

Article published in "Left Foot Forward" - does abacus abbot know her left from right? Did she not once appear in public wearing odd shoes??

    icon
