Stamp duty surge - why it's important for homes to have good broadband and TV packages

The end of the stamp duty holiday, which was introduced in July 2020, is now only a few weeks away.

The upcoming September 30 end date is expected to lead to a stamp duty surge as people scramble to beat the deadline.

Since its introduction, the holiday has helped to sustain record high levels of demand in the sales market as all types of buyers – from landlords and investors to downsizers and second-steppers – have sought to take advantage of the tax savings on offer.

While the end of the holiday has already been largely baked in, and the phasing out approach means we won’t see the feared cliff-edge scenario, there is still expected to be a spike in activity as the end of September nears.

One thing that might get forgotten about or neglected in the rush is the importance of good broadband and TV in a new home. More than ever, fast, reliable broadband at home is essential to many people’s lifestyles – particularly as people continue to work remotely.

Meanwhile, sitting down on the sofa in front of the TV in a new home can feel like a real landmark moment and help people to feel fully settled in their new abode. Whether it’s catching up on the gripping new Sunday night BBC1 drama Vigil, or the latest episode of Coronation Street, TV helps people to relax, de-stress and come together – all important things after the chaos of a house move.

It’s very likely that those buying and selling properties around the end of the stamp duty holiday will appreciate properties that include pre-installed internet and TV packages, or internet and TV that is speedy and efficient from the off. Often, the hassle of organising and setting up internet and TV packages can add another layer of stress to an already stressful event.

And in today’s world, where many people are still working full or part-time from home, homeowners can ill-afford to be without internet for days or even weeks after they’ve moved in somewhere new.

It’s not just workers, either; there are also the children and teenagers who need the internet for their studies to consider.

Installing internet and TV in advance

Agents can work closely with tech providers to ensure that internet and TV packages are already installed in a home when someone moves in, taking away the stress and hassle from the homeowners themselves.

Alternatively, agents can work with tech providers like Virgin Media to get new homeowners set up with internet, phone and TV as soon as possible after moving in, to ensure there isn’t a long gap between moving in and being up and running with these increasingly important – arguably essential – features.

By offering ultrafast broadband and the best TV packages to consumers at an earlier stage – for example before exchange of contracts – agents can improve their reputation among their clients.

They can also then collaborate with their clients to make sure they install these products and services at a convenient time. We know that, for many households, homes equipped with internet and TV from day dot will be very welcome.

Partnering with a provider like Virgin Media, a household brand renowned for its premium products and ultrafast speeds,

will offer a host of benefits including a new revenue stream for you and your employees, great broadband, and entertainment packages for your clients and a reduced waiting time to get online once they’ve moved into their new home.

All of this will become far more important as the end of the stamp duty holiday nears and the market spikes once again. It can be easy to be complacent about factors like pre-installed internet and TV, believing they aren’t important enough, when in fact it’s quite the opposite – particularly in this new world of greater remote working and increased reliance on connectivity.

Agents partnering with Virgin Media will benefit from on-shore account management, in addition to ongoing training and marketing support.
