A landlord in Sheffield, who also happens to be a company director and letting agent, has been handed a hefty fine for housing offences by Sheffield City Council.
Action was taken against Wasim Khan, of Abbeydale Road, and the company he directs, Hallam Hills Ltd, over two buy-to-let properties that he owns.
Unfortunately for Khan, he was exposed for not licensing or maintaining his properties correctly.
Sheffield Magistrates’ Court was told earlier this week that Khan and Hallam Hills had failed to license the homes, one on Club Garden Road and one on Bannerdale Road, as Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMOs).
It was also found that they had breached HMO regulations relating to the conditions of the homes.
Khan nor any representative of Hallam Hills Ltd attended court and the cases were proven in their absence and sentenced.
Khan was fined £2,600 for 13 offences, ordered to pay £1,200 costs and a victim surcharge of £30, while Hallam Hills Ltd was also fined £2,600 for 13 offences, and ordered to pay £1,200 costs and a victim surcharge of £30.
In a separate case, at the Magistrates’ Court on the same day, Sheffield City Council prosecuted landlord Mark Reaney, of The Quadrant, Sheffield, for similar offences.
Reaney pleaded guilty to failing to licence an HMO and for breaching HMO regulations. He was conditionally discharged but ordered to pay £1,295 costs and a victim surcharge of £20.
Commenting after the prosecution, which is the council’s eight this year relating to private housing standards, councillor Jayne Dunn, cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Community Safety at Sheffield City Council, said: “We’re one of the leading authorities in this area and I will continue to fight for good quality, safe housing. These latest prosecutions show just how seriously the council takes this.
“We will continue to clamp down on bad practices. It is not right that some landlords put profit before tenant safety.”
