Rental Reform Now! Charity wants help for tenants

Crisis, the homelessness charity, is demanding financial and legislative help for tenants.

Matt Downie, Crisis chief executive, says: “This is a time of huge uncertainty for many renters who are worried about being forced out of their home, falling into arrears or being hit with a rent hike.

“The rising cost of living means that for more and more people, housing costs are outstripping their incomes. The added threat of being made homeless is causing unimaginable stress for thousands.

“With the number of claims by landlords looking to repossess their homes more than doubling, it’s clear that we need to act quicky. We must urgently put a safety net in place to help people who might find their tenancies ended at a moment's notice.

“What’s more, with the Government still yet to honour its manifesto commitment to ban no-fault evictions, people are being forced to live each day with the stress of knowing that their landlord could at any time take the house back.

“But it doesn’t have to be like this. Investing in housing benefit so that it starts to cover the true cost of rent would immediately help prevent homelessness by protecting people from falling into arrears.

“And in the longer-term, the government also needs to urgently bring forward the Renters Reform Bill to protect tenants from being hit with a no-fault eviction notice.”

New figures from the Ministry of Justice show that there were 21,012 landlord repossession claims between July and September, a 106 per cent increase on the same quarter last year.

This is also a 16 per cent increase since April-to-June 2022.

The statistics also show that there were 5,403 actual landlord repossessions, 10 per cent more than at the same time last year, and nine per cent more than in the previous quarter.

There were also some 744 mortgage repossessions, a 90 per cent increase on the same time last year, and a similar level to the previous quarter.

I used to support Crisis at Christmas every year but their anti LL stance has caused me to reconsider and I give my money to a different charity now. Homeless charities have become too political. taking the easy option to blame LLs, and as a result there will be 2 less Christmas Dinners this year.

Likewise, as an agency we have provided 10 meals every Christmas for the past 10+ years, obtuse comments from overpaid executives like this (otherwise know as Ratner moments) do more harm than good!

No tenancy ends at ''a moments notice'', so that's total BS, If a landlord is planning to sell, which a number are he has to give at least 2 months notice, and normally more, if a tenant is in arrears of rent then an eviction notice through the door should be no surprise to them , this is all scare tactics with very little in the way of facts

Its rubbish all those outside organisations doing enormous damage who have no input or responsibility and provide no accommodation spouting out nonsense. We now have Tenants out of control, bringing in extras over crowding having babies as quick as can. Taking action against powerless Landlords instead of the Tenant.
Landlords should have the power to Manage instead of being afraid of his shadow. So many young male adults getting kept for free on the system. I seen it again today first hand, a blank stranger come out of my house with short pants, light top, no socks flip flops with straps between the toes. I thought where on earth is he going he walked about 40 meters around the corner and straight away the moped appears with his breakfast. he was tracking and knew exactly.
Give the landlord back control before its too late if not already.
Scrap THE WHITE PAPER now too much damage done, then expect Rishi to find the tax to repair the damage.
