Budget - landlords have three weeks to give Hunt advice

HM Treasury has opened its representations portal, meaning landlords - and anyone else - can submit their ideas for the next Budget.

Each representation has to take the form of a written submission with the aim of commenting on government policy and suggesting new ideas to be considered by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt in the Budget which takes place on March 6. 

Guidance from HM Treasury suggests that any representation should contain policy suggestions and explain the policy rationale, costs, benefits and deliverability of proposals. “It should also be evidence based, providing clear arguments on how it contributes to the aims of the Budget” advises the Treasury.

Trade bodies such as the National Residential Landlords Association and Propertymark always make representations; in recent years the pro-tenant activists in the likes of Generation Rent and the Renters Reform Alliance have also submitted representations.

Representations must be made by 5pm on January 24; there are more details here.

    They are a spent force 😰 whatever they do will only last half a year, WHEN Labour take power we are all in for a spanking 👯‍♂️💵💵

    Under labour, it will get worse (if it is possible), but at the end of their term, there will be even larger gap between properties available for rent, maybe fewer landlords too. The persistent harm done by the successive government is already coming to roost. Last 30 to 40 years, the councils have sold the properties as they cannot administer the tenants, nor carry out any maintenance on a regular basis so hitting LL's. JH needs to have a policy for releasing a lot of money for social housing and ensure that private LLs are such and choose who to rent to and what term. Tenants need to understand what it means to live in a rented property and how to look after it. This will benefit them in the long run.

    As Mr Osbourne's plan to get landlords to sell up is working well, an incentive to sell to our tenants (eg share the capital gains tax between the tenant and the selling landlord) would be welcome and potentially save another eviction.

    Allow landlords to offset £30 an hour for their time spent on running their rental business against tax.
