Clampdown on Airbnbs may be dropped due to council delays

It looks as if a prominent local authority in Scotland is going to temporarily scrap the country’s tight rules on who can short let property.

The Courier newspaper reports that Fife council may relax the country’s rules which insist hosts on Airbnb and other short let platforms are registered and approved, then given a licence.

This is because some 50,000 people are expected to descend on St Andrews golf course for the AIG Women’s Open, considered the top event in women’s golf.

A temporary exemption would allow unregistered and unlicenced home owners to apply to let out properties for up to six weeks without a licence.

The 150th Open Championship in brought 290,000 people to St Andrews in 2022 but since then, strict new licensing rules promoted by the Scottish National Party government means hosts cannot operate without a licence - and in Fife, it’s taking an average of nine months for the council to process applications.

Even those granted exemptions will still be subject to the same conditions as licensed ones, including the need for safety certificates and insurance: however, neighbours will not have a right to object to exemption applications.

Fife is a huge tourist county and many of its seaside towns are festooned with notices outside properties applying for short term rental licences so no wonder they have a huge backlog which was totally predictable but ignored by our SNP masters.

South Ayrshire has a similar even more urgent issue with the Open coming to Troon in July. The South Ayrshire jobsworths are really enjoying their new powers, insisting on all exit doors have thumblocks fitted, quibbling over kids' single rooms which have double beds but don't meet double room dimensions, picking holes in fire risk assessments produced by experienced landlords who don't happen to have what are deemed relevant professional qualifications etc.

Perhaps with an outbreak of common sense in our SNP masters, this might infect our local Councils?

West Dunbartonshire in addition to above involved building standards in process despite all requirements being met as per application form. In addition by building standards walls and ceilings within our home where we have a granny flat let out were required to be firewalled amongst many other alterations required by building standards. Yet in a certain other area I am well aware of licences are being given out by Licensing Dept. like confetti with virtually no requirements as are being imposed elsewhere. Cost me aroiund £12000 in all to comply with building standards and when you involve them you also require to employ an architect as well as get cert.of lawfulness.Building standards refuse to come out to advise and all applicants are left to carry on best as they can then when examined by them criticism and further improvements or alterations are required. West Dunbartonshire has just raised its appliction form from £766 by another hundred pounds or so.IN A YEAR!!!!!.Legalised theft. The same standards should apply to all and there should be no temporary licences issued to plug gaps left by a shower of incompetant idiots who fail to recognise that to have a progressive economy you must create jobs, wealth etc not destroy it.Short term lets are not the only industry this shower of numpties in government are intent on destroying.Talk about killing the goose that lays the golden eggs. We are not living in a levelling up society it is all about levelling down. Great if you are one of the sick, lame or lazy and not wanting to work. get all the benefits going and contibute nothing bu problems.
