The Generation Rent activist group is calling on supporters to bombard the new Housing Secretary with demands for rent controls.

And it even supplies activists with “hints to write a strong message” on the card, which it wants to be sent to Housing Secretary Angela Rayner.

Generation Rent says in a statement: “England hasn’t had proper rent controls since 1988. 

“Since then, private renters have risen by around 1,200%. 

“To put that into perspective, if the price of groceries had increased at the same rate as rents have, a basic 10-item food shop would cost nearly £120 today, which is more than five times what it actually is.  

“With over a third of private renters currently living in poverty, and with another inflation spike looming, we urgently need the government to act by bringing a limit on how much landlords can increase rents.”

And the activist group is even providing some to send for free, although it says the cost of one would be £2.75p.

Rayner, during her first period as Housing Secretary between July 2024 and September 2025, had ruled out private sector rent controls, but new Prime Minister Andy Burnham has expressed broad support for them during his time as Greater Manchester Mayor and during his recent Parliamentary by-election.

However, over the weekend Rayner told the BBC that rent controls were still off the agenda in England.
