A new row has blown up over leading politicians who are landlords.

A newspaper claims a second deputy leader of the Green Party is a landlord – despite the party having a policy to ban landlords.

The Sunday Telegraph reports that Rachel Millward – co-deputy leader – earns £5,000 annually by letting a room in her private family home.

The paper claims this is a six bedroom home with a swimming pool purchased for some £1.6m in 2021.

In addition it claims Millward has received a share of rental income from a home in Oxford “for two decades.”

The Green Party passed a motion at a 2025 conference seeking the effective abolition of private landlords by increasing council housing and moving rented properties under public control.

The motion claims private landlords add “no positive value to the economy or to society”, describes their approach to tenants as “inherently and intrinsically extractive and exploitative” and claims the private rental sector transfers wealth from the working class to landlords.

The Green Party also demands the outlawing of buy to let mortgages.

Last week it was revealed that another Green Party deputy leader – Mothin Ali – had bought a former council house for £165,000 in 2022, and a second for £157,000 in 2025 through his company MA Holdings. Both are now tenanted.

The Green Party has told the Telegraph it is “proud and fully supportive” of Millward and Ali, who “will continue to work to build a future in which our children and grandchildren can thrive”.
