Landlords across Orkney are being offered loans of up to £25,000 to repair and renovate residential properties that have been empty for at least 12 months.

The interest rate at 5.5% is described by the council as “affordable” compared to market rates.

The scheme is aimed at supporting owners to bring homes up to the required Repairing Standard and make them available for affordable private rent.

As part of the scheme, priority will be given to housing essential workers, helping to address one of the key challenges facing Orkney’s communities and local economy. 

Eligible essential workers include staff in health and social care, Council services, construction, hospitality and other occupations that are vital to the islands.

The council is particularly keen to hear from owners of one- and two-bedroom properties in Kirkwall and Stromness, although applications for other properties may also be considered.

The loan can support a wide range of repairs and improvements, including electrical works, heating systems, repairs to roofs, windows and doors, damp treatment and other essential improvements.

A council spokesperson says: “Across Orkney we know there are houses sitting empty that could become much-needed homes for people working in essential roles. This new scheme is an opportunity for owners to access financial support to carry out necessary repairs while helping tackle housing pressures and supporting our communities.”
