As autumn approaches and owners prepare to switch heating back on after the summer, experts are urging boiler pressures to be checked.
Most modern boilers have a built-in pressure gauge, and if the pressure is too low, the system may not operate as efficiently as intended or could struggle to heat radiators properly.
Gordon Wallis, energy expert at Your NRG, says: “Many people don’t think about their boiler until they need to turn the heating back on, but carrying out a quick pressure check before the weather turns colder could help avoid unnecessary problems later in the year.
“It’s a simple job that only takes a minute or two, yet it’s often overlooked after the heating has been switched off throughout the summer.
“If the pressure has dropped below the manufacturer’s recommended level, your boiler may have to work harder to heat your home efficiently, which could mean using more energy than necessary.
“Checking the pressure before temperatures begin to fall also gives homeowners time to resolve any issues before the heating is needed every day, rather than discovering a problem during the first cold spell.
“If you’re unsure what the correct pressure should be or don’t feel confident adjusting it yourself, it’s always best to refer to your boiler manual or speak to a qualified heating engineer.”
Boiler pressure naturally changes over time, particularly if a heating system has been switched off for long periods or has recently been bled.
While every boiler is different, the recommended operating pressure is typically shown on the pressure gauge or in the manufacturer’s guidance.
Wallis adds: “Autumn is the perfect time to give your heating system a quick once-over.
“Alongside checking the pressure, it’s worth making sure your thermostat is working properly, bleeding any radiators with cold spots and ensuring furniture isn’t blocking heat from circulating around your home.
“Small maintenance jobs carried out now can help make sure your heating system is ready for the months ahead, while also helping to reduce the risk of unexpected issues once temperatures begin to drop.”
