MPs invest in BTL market with taxpayers’ money

A number of MPs are currently earning rental income from properties that they bought with public help, according to a fresh report.

According to the Mirror, at least 16 MPs are currently claiming money to rent properties in London, while letting out their own homes in the capital, many of which taxpayers helped to buy.

Papers show that the International Trade Secretary, Liam Fox, has claimed £150,000 from the taxpayer to rent his London home since 2012, while earning at least £10,000 a year renting out his own property, which he used taxpayers’ money to help buy.

The property is said to now be worth £727,000, giving Fox a profit on paper of £610,000.

Another MP, David Crausby, has claimed £168,517 for renting a second London home since 2010, while also earning rent from a flat he purchased with public help.

Several other MPs are claiming rent while owning subsidised second London homes.

North Shropshire MP, Owen Paterson, is among those MPs. He owns a taxpayer-funded London house worth £1.3m, which he was letting it out for profit, while claiming up to £20,000 a year for renting another property. He stopped this in 2017.

Under the existing rule, MPs are barred from claiming mortgage interest payments on their second homes but they can claim up to £22,760 a year in rent.

They must declare properties they rent for more than £10,000 a year.

Yet another example of this corrupt administration's and other MPs continuing expenses scandal. Little has changed since the last one! Disgraceful!

And now they want private landlords to have to house delinquent tenants for months on end before getting a resolution and having to pay lawyers through the nose to get an eviction. An eviction letter cost me £750 two years ago! Luckily the tenant left!

Governments, whether local or central are corrupt, always have been, always will be, something we all have to live with, but it does leave a nasty taste.

    I had the same problem.
They say that you learn from your mistakes, but they ain't half costly.

Funny how they resent everybody else making money but it's ok for them to fleece the taxpayer they are all crooks

    More 'noses in the trough'?
It doesn't surprise me one iota.
The so-called socialists are as bad as the Tories when it comes to using taxpayers money to fund their lifestyles.
I see that Prescott has got himself a nice TV series.
The Kinnocks have made a good living out of Europe and they will no doubt get a nice fat pension out of it.
It is the "do what I say, don't do what I do" mentality.
    Hypocrisy of the highest order.
