Most students’ mental health damaged by accommodation - claim...

Nine in 10 students claim that their accommodation and living environment are negatively affecting their mental health.

Online research by Here! Student Living claims 90% of students admitting their living environment negatively affected their mental health, with just under a third saying it has a ‘huge’ impact (32%).

Some 41% admit to feeling stressed ‘often’ with 19% saying that they feel this way ‘very often’.

Just 1% of respondents claimed they are ‘never stressed.’

Workload (67%), cost of living (67%) and exams (60%) were also revealed to be contributing to student stress with a third of students claiming this had a negative impact on their academic performance (33%).

A spokesperson for the survey organiser says: “Where a student lives has a profound impact on how they feel.

“A poorly managed, isolating environment amplifies stress, while a well-run, community-focused one can genuinely buffer against it. Simple things like responsive maintenance, clean communal spaces, a friendly face at reception all make a measurable difference to how settled a student feels day to day.”
