A Green Party led local council says it’s setting up a renters’ forum to “take on” rogue landlords.
Haringey council in north London says the three-monthly forum will bring together tenants with council officers, local community organisations and tenant rights bodies.
The council says: “Many renters in Haringey report that they are struggling with landlords who ignore requests for repairs, charge extortionate rates of rent and fail to meet several other responsibilities.”
The statement continues by saying the forum will renters’ forum will “identify common problems with rented homes in Haringey; help [the council] improve enforcement against landlords; drive up awareness of the rights renters have and the rules and regulations around renting; [and] involve residents in council decisions locally and in national campaigns.”
It goes on to say the forum “will be run as a collaborative initiative, with residents invited to participate in the planning and leadership of meetings.”
The first forum takes place on September 2.
