A rogue landlord is reported to have been stripped of his honour by the King.
Nirpaul Riat, from London, has been removed as an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire according to a series of media reports.
Hounslow council recently lobbied for the honour’s removal.
Back in 2023 the council secured a successful prosecution of Riat when judges fined him £300,000.
It was proven that Riat had unlawfully converted houses into flats and let outbuildings to vulnerable people who were forced to live in what were described as “terrible conditions”.
In 2023 Landlord Today reported on the prosecution here: https://www.landlordtoday.co.uk/breaking-news/2023/07/shock-for-charity-landlord-hit-with-enormous-fine/
Riat had previously been fined £20,000 in 2009 for failing to secure permission to convert a Hounslow property into flats.
He was made an OBE in 2011 for “services to charity and to the Punjabi people”.
A London Standard report says Riat has been stripped of his honour because his conduct had “brought the honours system into disrepute.”
